”Where’s the science?”
The question I get every time I talk about postpartum digestive deficiencies.
You’ll never find a study titled “Cold Smoothies Harm Postpartum Recovery” because researchers aren’t studying this specific population in this specific way.
But here’s what we DO know from decades of research:
Gastric acid and enzyme production should return to pre-pregnancy levels by 4-6 weeks postpartum….
But that’s not what we’re seeing clinically in today’s modern world.
Women are staying in this deficient state much longer due to:
→ Increased toxin exposure
→ Birth trauma (physical and emotional)
→ Deeper nutritional depletion gaps
→ More daily demands with less support
You can find my published peer-reviewed research in the JOPPPAH journal titled “Postpartum Digestion is Not Normal Digestion”.
All the research on how compromised digestion impacts healing, inflammation, and mental health is extensive.
The Result: Extended digestive deficiency = chronic inflammation = mental health challenges + autoimmune disease risk.
This is why raw, cold foods during early recovery can be problematic for many women. Not because they’re “bad” foods, but because they require more digestion ability than many sensitive postpartum bodies can handle.

Not a soul told her what was really coming. And because postpartum is often had behind closed doors, she’s never witnessed it either.
The grief for who she was, the unfamiliarity with her own face in photos, the love so large it terrifies her. None of it was named and so she assumed something was wrong with her.
Nothing is wrong with her. She is in the middle of matrescence, the developmental process of becoming a mother. It’s as profound and disorienting as adolescence, and almost entirely absent from postpartum education.
