The REAL History of Postpartum Mental Health: EP105
Postpartum Depression was not recognized in the Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders until 1994.
Since the 16th century, mental health has had a long and dark history. Women have been at the forefront of experimentation, isolation, and even execution.
This history has created fear, shame, and a societal stigma around mental
health.
What has changed in the last few decades does not erase 1000’s
of years of mistreatment.
Today, I’m sharing with you all a clip from our Perinatal Mental Health Certificate training where we covered the history of mental health as it relates to women and postpartum.

In this episode, I am sharing:
- The study of mental health goes back to Ancient Greece
- Religion plays a key role in this history
- Outcasting of individuals in the 16th century
- Men start to replace women in maternal health field
- Insane asylums and electric shock therapy to treat PPD/PPA
- Generational impact on women and mothers
